 The Power of the Air

DDG-20 - USS Goldsburough ASROC from my shophat we speak isn’t just hot air. It encourages and heals, destroys and condemns. Our thinking is one thing – it hurts us. But, the self-talk we let fly out of our hurt, is completely another. I know. I’ve done more damage with my words, than with any other weapon.

I was one of the men responsible for the nuclear warheads on our ship during Vietnam. I never launched an armed warhead, but the words I’ve spoken in anger still ring in some people’s heads.

Which is worse? A nuclear weapon stowed safely in a bunk, or loose words flying around peoples memory? I say the loose words.

I had lunch with James Irwin, Apollo 15 Lunar Module Pilot. We talked about the mission, and his experiences in space and on the moon that influenced the rest of his life, including an expedition on Mount Ararat in search of Noah’s ark. I asked Jim to describe leaving the earths atmosphere, and returning to it at the end of the mission. He said that he and other astronauts shared a sense of clairvoyance during the mission. NASA attributed the ‘lack of clutter’ in Jims mind to the 100% oxygen environment within the capsule. Jim believed it was evidence to support faith in scripture.Video of James Irwin

Jim was the first to point me to Ephesians 2:2, where the domain of the ‘prince of the power of the air’ is on earth, and not in space. Jim said that he clearly felt different in space, as if leaving the earth’s atmosphere cleaned up his signal to think without distraction. “it was as if the noise in my mind went away. It was much easier to concentrate on my duties.”

Daniel, Dean Rush, Charlie Duke I asked the same of Apollo 16 Astronaut, Charlie Duke. He said that; “the schedule of the mission was intense. Every moment was accounted for.” Charlie said he had little time to consider anything else, but was pleased that he “was able to focus more easily, and not be distracted by chatter”. He said that he recognized it more in “hindsight after returning to earth”, as a “subtle sense of noise or ‘static’ that again surrounded my thoughts.”

Ephesians 2:2  “in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.”
Ephesians 2:2  “in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,”

Dr. Masaru Emoto teaches about the power of the spoken word on objects like ice crystals, water and even ordinary objects like rice. I know this stuff sounds a bit weird, but it makes me think before I speak, and that’s a good thing in itself – wouldn’t you agree?
